Hollywood Steps Out – 63 years young

Just one clip from the gorgeously drippy Merrie Melodies short Hollywood Steps Out.  This is a cartoon deeply embedded in my consciousness, a result of repeat viewings of our Cartoons R Fun video collection when I was a child.  The dancing is exquisite, and the video should be viewed in full here.

Asses, asses and hips.  Hips and asses.

I made a zine

These notes from ‘The Transformation of Eve’, by Robert Martensen (from a fantastically interesting book Sexual Knowledge, Sexual Science), prompted a swift leap into the craft of the 1-page zine.  It kinda counts as my first contribution to the 24 Hour Zine Thing, too, but I guess the components of its conception had been brewing away for a good week before the act.  The passage which sparked this zine’s inception was from a medieval French medical study called Secrets des dames, and reads thusly:

‘And whosoever were to take a hair from the pubis of a woman and mix it with the menses and then put it in a dung-heap, would at the end of the year find wicked venomous beasts.’

[I’VE JUST REALISED I SPELLED VENOMOUS WRONG IN MY NOTES AND THEREFORE THE ZINE – ASS!]

Nuts.  Ah well, here’s how the layout went (gotta have some more fun with paper folds and flaps and all they might suggest):

Film Society Poster Design: ‘Mind Game’

I was commandeering the Film Society throughout the month of March – showing my pick of four ‘grown-up’ animated films.  The first – and still my favourite – was Masaaki Yuasa’s Mind Game.  My poster was based on one of my favourite scenes from the film, a hugely influential piece of animation for my FMP:

Although I had only one viewing companion (potentially a result of the almost unreadable text on the poster), seeing it on our Studio Theatre’s big screen was a marvel.  Here’s a sickening GIF of the making process – three/four preliminary sketches resulted in the final form, which was scanned in and filled out using Photoshop and the Wacom.  I’ll really miss these college resources when I’m gone.

And the final, static poster:

Just a final note, Mind Game has one of the most beautiful sex scenes I have ever seen too.
